Giveaway Winners and Birthday Celebrations and a Special Announcement

February is Fantasy Month 2

Fantasy Month ends today, though there are plenty of blog posts in the link-up to catch up on if you haven’t read them all yet, and I’m sure I’ll be playing catch-up for a while still, trying to make sure I got to everyone’s comments. Thank you all so much for making this the best Fantasy Month ever (and please don’t stop leaving me comments now that I’m not rewarding you with giveaway entries for it!) hahaha.

Speaking of giveaways… today we find out who are the winners of our awesome prizes… later on in this post.

But first, although my first book has been out for 8 years, because I chose to release it on Leap Day, today is only King’s Warrior’s SECOND official birthday!

KW Front

“For some ridiculous reason, to which, however, I’ve no desire to be disloyal,
Some person in authority, I don’t know who, very likely the Astronomer Royal,
Has decided that, although for such a beastly month as February,
twenty-eight days as a rule are plenty,
One year in every four his days shall be reckoned as nine and twenty.”
~Pirates of Penzance

I thought some of you might enjoy a few interesting stats on this debut novel of mine.

In the eight years since it has been released:

~2 editions (1st edition had white pages, 2nd had cream colored pages and I fixed all the typos)

~18,558 e-copies have been downloaded on various free days

~616 ebooks have been bought at 99 cents or full price

~over 300 paperback copies have been bought either through Amazon or at in-person events

~295,939 pages read (I was really hoping that would add up to 300,000… but oh well… it’s still a pretty big number and… if we assume that people are reading the whole book, estimates out to it having been read by 450 people through KU).

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT

As part of the celebration of the end of Fantasy Month, and as part of the King’s Warrior Birthday Celebration, today I am revealing some exciting news!!! King’s Warrior is going to be an AUDIO BOOK!!!!

That’s right! I’ve found an amazing narrator who is excited to work on this project in spite of its length and massive cast list and ridiculous pronunciations (really, I’m not sure he really knows what he’s getting into… um… I hope he doesn’t run away when he finds out what the scope of this project really is…)

After years of dreaming about producing King’s Warrior in audio-book format, and secretly dreaming that I might be able to do the narration myself, I have come to realize something very important.

In order to record an audio book, you need some very key things:

1. Good equipment

2. Time

3. Quiet

4. A particular set of skills

I can buy the first… but the other two are things that sort of escape me with four tiny hobbits running around. AND… after recording the audio version of ‘Twas an Evening in Bethlehem (which, in spite of taking only 4 minutes to record, took approximately 3-4 hours to produce!) I started to realize that doing the recordings myself was unrealistic. And… while I am quite good at reading books out loud, I honestly don’t have the necessary skill to be an audiobook narrator.

Thankfully, Benjamin Fife DOES have that skill. We are super excited to work with him on this project, not just to turn King’s Warrior into an audio book, but also the rest of the series!

Thanks again! That’s all for Fantasy Month (until next year).

It might be a little quiet around here for a while, I need to focus on editing Turrim Archive and there’s a plan in place to update this little website of mine, so there may be some “UNDER CONSTRUCTION” signs posted at some point, but don’t worry! I’ll still be around, and there are some other exciting things we’re gearing up for that I’ll tell you more about later.

But for now, we bid another #FantasyMonth “adieu….”

Oh… yeah… it still hurts.

YAY! I’m so excited to work with you on this project too! I had a sneakin’ suspicion that the audiobook might be the announcement. From what I’ve already read of your books, I feel like I’m getting to work with someone like Lloyd Alexander, or C.S. Lewis.
Gotta say – the pop references in this post just continue to convince me that we’re supposed to be working together. 1 – I played Frederick in a very simplified Pirates of Penzance play way back in 8th grade. 2- Loki. Just yeah. 3. Pinky pie. My personal favorite is Rainbow Dash. When my kids first started watching MLP, I found it silly, programmatic & over the top. Then I heard a voice I recognized, playing a character I recognized. Kudos John De Lancie; you turned me into a Brony. 4 – David Tennant is the best!!!! Though I really have a hard time picking between him, Matt Smith & now Jodie Whitaker (wasn’t sure about the whole gender swap, but she OWNS the role. And the writing for her so far has been phenomenal. I blame Moffat that Capaldi doesn’t rank as one of my favorites. And going way back… John Pertwee is my favorite “early” doc.)
I ramble. But I am so excited to do this with you! Bring on the giant cast & the long books. :) This will be the longest individual book I’ve produced so far. Thanks for your faith in my skills & partnering with me on this.

:) :) :)

Awwww, Lloyd Alexander and C.S. Lewis are two of my all-time favorite authors, and I am honored to be compared to them!

1. That’s super cool! I rarely meet anyone who knows what Pirates of Penzance is! (Clearly, unlike Eustace Scrubb, you’ve read all the RIGHT sorts of books/seen the right movies!!!) :)

2. Yes. Loki. I didn’t originally get all the hype about him, but then we watched the Avengers movies in what I call “the Thor Arc” which means we started with Thor 1 and then watched all the movies in order that have Thor (and by extension Loki) in them… and the character arcs of those two are just masterfully done!

3. We love MLP. And Discord especially! The kids love Discord, and it was SO much fun getting to introduce them to Q when we started watching TNG with them. Q is their favorite and I love that they “get” that he and Discord are basically the same character.

4. Tennant is “my” doctor, though I love Matt Smith and even have a soft spot for Ecclestein and I thought Capaldi had some moments of brilliance and heart-tugging… but unfortunately he only really got moments, which I think underused his ability as an actor.

I am so excited about working with you on these audiobooks! (And glad that you clearly don’t scare easily!) haha

That’s really weird… I’m not seeing them anywhere (checked my spam folder just to be sure). Apparently the internet ate them. Sadness.

AAAHHHH, JENELLE. THIS WAS SUCH AN AMAZING FANTASY MONTH! I seriously cannot thank you enough for hosting this. I know you worked SO hard and it showed. The giveaway, the posts, EVERYTHING was just amazing. I felt like I learned so, so, sooo much too. World building is just not my strongsuit, so having an entire month breaking down all the many aspects of it was more helpful than I can put into words. I felt like I just went through a super fun world building workshop, and feel MUCH more equipped to strengthen my worlds. I cannot even tell you how much inspiration and motivation I gained from your posts. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! This was just what I needed. Not to mention it was a BLAST. I’m so sad to see February leave (how dare you use that Ten gif, now I am more sad!), but what a fun month you made it for us!

And EEEEEE! That is thrilling King’s Warrior is getting an audiobook!!!! CONGRATS! :D And a huge happy birthday to King’s Warrior! *throw confetti* So many exciting thiiings!

Thank you again for an absolutely fantabulous month! And for the giveaway prizes! EEP. I cannot wait to get my tote bag!

Ooooh, audiobook! I don’t listen to audiobooks half as much as I used to, but I’m still very excited for you! Hope that goes well!

And thanks for hosting this (and for the coming castle magnet). :D

I don’t typically listen to audiobooks that much, either. (Mostly because I don’t have time and can read way faster than most people can talk, so it takes me longer to get through an audio book than it would to just read the pages). Buuuuut, that said, I actually HAVE recently started listening to audiobooks more while doing dishes/laundry/etc, and now that we have an actual yard and riding mower, I foresee some hours on the mower listening to more audiobooks this summer!!! So that’s fun!

And I’m excited about having it in a format that allows my audio-book loving friends to enjoy the story :) I’ve had multiple people ask over the years about it and I’ve always kind of hemmed and hawwed about it. So it’s really fun to get to finally say, “Yeah, that’ll be a thing this year.” :)

Yay! The auidobook announcement is so exciting! I’m sure that will open the door to lots of people to read the book. I hope it is a smashing success!

And thank you for hosting Fantasy Month. I’m sorry I wasn’t more active in the comments and only managed one post, but life right now is not giving much much time to be online.

I really appreciate you sharing the stats on King’s Warrior as well. That is a lot of free copies! And the sales are great too, almost 1000 total copies in the hands of readers. That is quite an accomplishment. Just think if they were all in the same room together. That many people bought your book! It’s very humbling when you stop and think about it. And it has a ton of great reviews. So I’d say it’s doing quite well on its “second” birthday! Congratulations!

Sorry life is busy and things. Hope it’s all good busy, though!

I know I’m not necessarily “killing it” in the sales department, but it is kind of encouraging to see the numbers all laid out like that. For a debut novel by someone who really had no clue what she was doing way back in 2012… it hasn’t done too shabby. :)
