A gong rings. A woman’s voice rises over the rolling green hills, a song pouring from her lips. A beautiful song. Strains of melody gather beneath the shadows of the hills and soar into the brilliant blue of the sky. The horses of the Rohirrim raise their heads, their nostrils flaring with expectation. Soon, they will ride!
The party tree is hung with streamers and strands of tiny lanterns, giving the area beneath its wide branches a warm, magical glow.
Tables have been set out and covered in white, homespun cotton cloths, and only the best dishes and silverware have been laid.

“Good morning!” His greeting is noncomittal. A thing you say to passersby.
I pause. “Good morning, Bilbo.”
He frowns around his pipe. “Did Gandalf send you? I’m not in the mood for another adventure at present.”
“It’s that time of year again, Bilbo.”
At this, his eyes spark with interest. “September already?” He pulls out his pocketwatch and inspects it. “You are early,” he accuses.
