Fantasy Fandom Tag

It’s Fantasy Month once again, and here I am with my second post, stealing Madeline'‘s Tag because I’m too lazy to create my own. But hey, I thought this tag was pretty epic, and I have been wanting to answer the questions since she made it…. uuuummmm… two years ago. And it goes with this year’s Fantasy Month theme. So many good reasons to snag this!

Also, hearts! And love! And Valentine’s Day! And fandoms we love! What could be better?

The Rules

  1. Include the graphic somewhere in your post!

  2. Answer the questions!

  3. Tag two fangirls (or boys, I suppose!)

(If you don’t know what a fandom is, it’s basically a group of fans of a particular thing, like Star Wars or Harry Potter.)

The Questions

What’s the first fandom you remember becoming a part of?

This is a tough one. Are “fairy tales” a legitimate fandom? I mean, I grew up on the old Disney classics: Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White… and I had so many different books of fairy tales as a kid that I just devoured. I’d have to say fairy tales. (And now my top favorite posts probably make a little more sense to some of you who have noticed that retellings tend to make an appearance every year)!

What’s the newest fandom you’ve come to enjoy?

Definitely The Mandalorian. Yes, it’s a spin-off fandom of a fandom I’m already a part of… but it’s also it’s own thing I and love it for being its own thing and for redeeming Star Wars in general.

Also Keeper of the Lost Cities… though I haven’t yet read all the books, so I don’t know if I can count myself as IN the fandom yet, but I am enjoying it mightily.

What’s a fandom guaranteed to give you feels?

Lord of the Rings. So many emotions. Every single time.

Also How to Train Your Dragon (the movies/tv show version… I did not like the books). This was one of those franchises that started out incredible and just somehow managed to maintain a level of quality in storytelling that seldom survives sequels and crossing between movie and cartoon tv show… but this one managed to do it. It is a rare gem.

And… I mean, if by “feels” you mean, guaranteed to make you laugh hysterically… then Psych would probably qualify. I can always count on Psych to lift my spirits, no matter what.

What’s a guilty pleasure fandom of yours?

See… “guilty pleasure” implies that I feel somehow guilty or bad for loving something, and I’m a little too discerning about the things I love. But… if we’re just going for something more akin to “fandom you might not expect me to be part of” then I’d have to go with Heartland. It’s super adorable, and has all the ridiculous drama, but I appreciate how clean it is, and HORSES! (side-note: I never outgrew my “horse crazy” jr. high years).

What’s the weirdest fandom you’ve heard of/are a part of?

While I hadn’t heard of it when Madeline first did the tag, I have since watched rather a lot of Gravity Falls and… yeah… it really doesn’t get much weirder than that.

Yeah… I don’t even know.

It’s extremely… odd.

At some point I need to finish the show, but it got a LOT creepier in the third season and started being nightmare-inducing (for the kiddos… but there were definitely aspects that I found a little too creepy for myself, as well).

Favorite popular/widely-known fandom?

This is going to have to be a toss-up between Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. I mean, everyone has heard of at least one or the other, and I honestly can’t decide between them. Okay, yes I can. Lord of the Rings. Every time. Always. But the OT Star Wars is a VEEEEERRRY close second.

Favorite bookish fandom?

Harry Potter. (I mean, besides LOTR, but I can’t just say LOTR for every one of these questions… so… we’ll branch out a bit). I love Harry Potter. Oooh, now I want to go re-read them. And re-watch them.

What do you consider your ‘home base’, a fandom you can always come back to?

Oh man… all of them? I mean, if I enjoy something enough, coming back to it is always like coming back home.

What’s a fandom you know all about…but aren’t actually into it?

Probably The Hunger Games. I’ve read all three books, watched the first two movies, and I even really enjoyed the first book. But after the first book, I just… had some major complaints.

Also, Brandon Sanderson. I like some of his books, but I’m just not as overly hyper about his writing as just about everyone else I know is.

Which fandom has the best characters?

Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Best characters ever. I love them. I love hanging out with them. They make me laugh, they make me cry, sometimes they make me want to throw things at them. I love them.

Jack and Daniel are my FAVORITE. I love the way they are foils to each other, and how they are often at odds, but at the end of the day, they are best friends and they would each take a bullet for the other without hesitation. The friendships and camaraderie in this show is just so fun… and the fierce-friend/sibling-like relationships they develop within their team is simultaneously hysterical and heartwarming.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Stargate SG-1 is my all-time favorite TV series. Ever. (followed closely by Atlantis).

Name your all-time favorite ship.

Captain Navarre and Isabeau from Ladyhawke

What’s a fandom you’re curious about joining?

Wow. I…. I don’t even know. Most of the fandoms I’ve been curious about, I’m now either in, or I’ve tried and didn’t like.

Do you have any epic, awesome stories that I should know about? Maybe something that isn’t doesn’t have a fandom yet, but should? Toss your recommendations my way!

I nominate…

Sam @Sam’s Bookshire

Sarah @Dreams and Dragons (or Light and Shadows)

Moth of the Day

Sarah @Sixty-Something Trees

Jen @Living Outside the Lines

And anyone else who wants to play along! Or if you just want to answer the questions (all, some, one… whatever your fancy) in the comments, I’d love to hear your answers!
